The most important factor that will help you lose weight and keep the weight off is a permanent change to what you eat. We put on weight because we eat too much food or the wrong type of food. Eating the right food is harder than you might think, because unless you have been trained to read food labels you can easily be misled by clever marketing by the food manufacturers.
The good news is, the nutritional consultants at the National Nutrition Clinic have done all the hard work for you in our unique Slim Well With GL Eating Plan.
You may have heard of the Glycaemic Index, which rates foods by how much they impact your blood sugar level. High GI foods can cause a 'sugar rush' which temporarily makes you feel good, only to leave you tired and craving more sugar shortly afterwards. Low GI foods help you to feel full for longer, so are clearly useful for those of us looking to lose weight.
But what really matters is not the theoretical GI of a food, but the overall mix of what you eat across all your meals and snacks. That's why we have based our new Slim Well With GL Eating Plan on the Glycaemic Load (GL), which measures your overall glycaemic intake and balances high and low GI foods into the correct overall load. This means that you can manage your blood sugar level at the same time as losing weight.
Each new patient on the Medical Weight Loss Programme receives their copy of the Slim Well With GL Eating Plan at their first visit to the clinic. We also have the plan available in Portugese so please ask for this version if Portugese is your first language, and we have Afro Caribbean and Indian plans to cater for all ethnicities.
We have a range of other Eating Plans available as part of your treatment, including a 28 day 1200 calorie per day plan made up of an interesting variety of nutritious foods, approved by government dieticians.
We also offer Vegetarian Plans and a list of high and low calorie foods for those who prefer to make up their own eating plan.
If you have special likes and dislikes, work difficult hours or suffer food intolerances, we can refer you to the National Nutrition Clinic where one of their highly qualified nutritionists can develop a personalised eating plan just for you.
If you are having trouble losing weight despite using these eating plans and the medication which our doctors provide, or you would prefer to lose weight without the help of medication, again we can refer you to the Nutritional Consultants at the National Nutrition Clinic, co-located with all our clinics.
They can consult with you in detail about how the foods you are eating are affecting your digestive system, and what changes may be needed if you are to lose weight. For more information about the National Nutrition Clinic, please visit their site at
Top Research Group Proves Our Methods WorkThis new approach has been endorsed by the latest research from the Cochrane Collaboration, released on 18th July 2007. The research studied 202 patients, some of whom were given a low GI diet while others remained on a standard eating plan. Here are the authors’ key findings:
“The overweight or obese people on the low GI diet lost more weight than those receiving standard diets.
Body mass index and cholesterol decreased significantly more in the low GI group.
In comparing low GI diets to restricted calorie low-fat diets, participants fared as well or better on the low GI diet, even though they could eat as much as desired. Lowering the glycaemic load of the diet appears to be an effective method of promoting weight loss and can be simply incorporated into a person's lifestyle.” The Cochrane Collaboration
